Janny's Cottage is ideally situated for anyone wanting to explore the magnificent glens and mountains of the West Highlands
of Scotland as well as lochs, islands and outstanding beaches. The area has much to offer for walkers and climbers, and two of Scotland's main
ski areas are within easy reach - one is actually within sight of the cottage. You can also enjoy fishing, golf, castles,
distilleries, museums and much more.
The local shop and a pub can be found three miles away. Fort William is a ten-minute drive and offers supermarkets, a leisure centre, and a wide choice of restaurants and shopping opportunities.
The cottage is within walking distance of the River Lochy and its salmon fishing (for which a permit is required). We are only 3 miles from the location for the annual U.C.I. Mountain Bike World Cup.
There are lots of events throughout the year and Highland Games in the summer.
As for touring and sightseeing, you are spoilt for choice in every direction. Fort William itself is home to the excellent
West Highland Museum, and the Treasures of the Earth geological museum can be found in Corpach. There is also a distillery in Fort William,
and a gondola service up Aonach Mor throughout the year.
Discover the Road to the Isles, the superbly scenic journey from Fort William to Mallaig. Either take your car for a 45-mile drive along roads that have been hugely improved in recent decades, or relax on the Jacobite steam train which runs throughout the summer. This area has been used as a filming location for movies such as Harry Potter, Highlander, Braveheart and Local Hero. Enjoy beautiful beaches along the Silver Sands of Morar, complete with views out to the Isle of Skye and the Small Isles.
At Glenfinnan you can see the famous curved viaduct, as well as the Glenfinnan Monument and the National Trust for Scotland visitor centre.
You can also take a cruise on Loch Shiel.
Mallaig is the ferry point for the Isle of Skye which is easy to visit from Janny's Cottage in a day. This magical island has much to offer, including mountains, castles, a whisky distillery, boat trips and more.
Take the alternative route to Skye via Loch Cluanie, Kyle of Lochalsh and the Skye Bridge and you will pass photogenic Eilean Donan Castle,
used in numerous films including James Bond. A great day out is to do a circular trip going to Skye via the ferry from Mallaig and returning
via the bridge.
Drive north-east for some 30 miles and you reach the southern tip of Loch Ness. Boat trips to spot the monster are available. Continue on past the splendid ruins of Urquhart Castle to Inverness if you wish to visit the capital city of the Highlands.
To the south of Fort William it is around 50 miles to Oban. En route you pass Glencoe, castles, gardens and the Sea Life Centre.
Oban is a ferry hub, and has a distillery in the centre of the town. Or why not take the little ferry from Port Appin to
visit the Isle of Lismore for a day?
Alternatively, take the Corran ferry (10 minutes south of Fort William) over to Morar and the Ardnamurchan peninsula. This allows you to explore one of Scotland's most remote areas, complete with more magnificent beaches and a ferry to Mull.
