North-East Fife was a district council area which existed from 1975 to 1996. It was one of three district councils that delivered a range of local level services within the wider area of the region of Fife, which over this period was one of the 12 regions into which Scotland was divided.
North-East Fife was formed from the eastern portion of the traditional county of Fife, which in 1975 became a region with only slight boundary changes. The result was a district which included settlements such as St Andrews, Newport-on-Tay, Cupar, Newburgh, Auchtermuchty, Falkland, Pittenweem, Anstruther and Crail. It was bordered by Perth & Kinross, a district of Central Region, and by Fife's Kirkcaldy District.
When regions and districts disappeared from the scene in the 1996 reorganisation, the area of North-East Fife became part of the unitary council area of Fife. For administrative purposes, Fife is divided by the council into three management areas. These use the boundaries of the old districts, with the result that the area of North-East Fife is now the St Andrews and East Fife management area.
