You know you are
getting well off the beaten track in Scotland when you find yourself
on an island that can only be reached from another island. The island
of Raasay, some 14 miles long and a maximum of a little over 3 miles
wide, lies off the east coast of the Isle of Skye. The ferry serving
the island leaves from Sconser, on
the east side of the Isle of Skye, before crossing the southern end

20 September 1746: Bonnie Prince Charlie sails for France from Loch nan Uamh near Arisaig, very close to the spot at which he landed in July 1745. The site is today marked by the Prince's Cairn.
20 September 1842: The birth in Kincardine of Sir James Dewar, an eminent chemist and physicist with particular interests in low temperature chemistry, the liquefaction of gases and spectroscopy.
20 September 1854: Arctic explorer Dr John Rae sails from Canada for England with news of the fate of the missing expedition of Sir John Franklin.
